About Us

LIVINGSTON MODEL AIRCRAFT CLUB (LMAC)

has been in existence for many years and is based at Kirknewton Airfield on Ministry of Defence Property. The airfield, which is located approximately 0.8 miles south of the village of KIRKNEWTON on the B7031 roadway, some 6 miles or so; west of EDINBURGH City limits, was used by military aircraft during WWII and continued as an American Military base until the late 1960’s.

Nowadays, the site which has two “tarmac” runways, is shared with small private aircraft who have exclusive use of the Main or South runway. LMAC use the secondary or North runway and all model flying is conducted in a northerly direction to avoid conflict with the private aircraft who have “Right of Way” at all times.

Most branches of aeromodelling can be accommodated, although the strongest support is for fixed wing Radio Control flying both IC and Electric.  Please note that the club does not currently allow drones.

Camaraderie is another important aspect within the hobby and as a member of LMAC you can be assured of excellent companionship and humour. We have members of all ages, some of whom are regular participants even during the winter months.

DISABLED persons are also catered for with easy access to the airfield, and hard standing, should the use of a wheelchair prove necessary.

VISITATION to the club flying site is permitted but it is requested that you contact us in advance so that you can be familiarised with the conduct necessary for your attendance on M.O.D. Property.

We are within easy commuting distance of EDINBURGH INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT. Our site is idyllic for model aircraft enthusiasts and is perhaps one of the best venues within the “Central Belt” of Scotland. A warm welcome awaits you!

Objectives

LMAC is affiliated to both the Scottish Aeromodellers Association (S.A.A) and the British Model Flying Association (BMFA) national governing bodies for the hobby. LMAC is committed to promoting the interest and participation of the sport of aeromodelling generally, but more especially within the LIVINGSTON area, and to instruct beginners in safe pursuit of the sport in line with the S.A.A Safety Code and BMFA Proficiency and Achievement Scheme.

In this connection, the club has several experienced and suitably qualified R/C pilots who are capable of advancing the novice from the outset. Advice is freely given with regard to the initial purchase of equipment and model set-up.  Ideally, the novice will be tutored via the “buddy box” system during the initial stages and will be encouraged to attain a S.A.A. “Bronze Safety Award” or BMFA "A certificate". This ensures that the knowledge gained forms the solid foundation to a potentially lifelong and rewarding pastime, based on “safe” practice.
